"Can you speak up?" is one of the most common complaints on calls — and the frustrating part is that a quiet microphone almost never has one single cause. Your voice passes through a chain: the microphone itself, your operating system's input level, and finally the app you're speaking into. Any link in that chain can quietly cut your volume. This guide shows you how to find which link is failing, using a live level meter as your measuring stick, and how to fix each cause.
First: Measure, Don't Guess
Before changing any setting, get a baseline. Open the microphone test, allow access, and speak at your normal call volume. Watch the level meter:
- Meter moves well into the upper-middle range: your mic and system level are fine. The quiet complaint comes from a specific app — skip to the app-settings section below.
- Meter barely moves: the problem is before the app — system input level, boost, positioning, or the hardware itself. Work through the sections in order.
- Meter doesn't move at all: that's not a quiet mic, it's a dead input — wrong device selected, muted, or blocked. Start with our mic testing guide to get signal first.
Why this matters: testing in the browser isolates your microphone from any one app's settings. If the meter is healthy here but you're quiet in Discord, you've just eliminated the mic, the cable, and Windows/macOS in one step.

Fix 1 — Raise the System Input Level
Windows
- Open Settings → System → Sound.
- Under Input, select the microphone you actually use (check it's the right one — headsets and webcams both register mics).
- Raise the input volume slider and speak while watching the built-in level bar.
- Still quiet at 100%? Open the classic control panel: search "Sound settings" → More sound settings → Recording, double-click your mic, and open the Levels tab. Many microphones expose a separate Microphone Boost slider here (typically +10 to +30 dB). Add boost gradually — too much amplifies hiss along with your voice.
macOS
- Open System Settings → Sound → Input.
- Select your microphone and raise the Input volume slider while speaking; the input level meter below shows the result.
- macOS has no boost control — if the slider is maxed and you're still quiet, the fix is physical (closer, better positioning) or on the microphone's own gain dial if it has one.
Fix 2 — Check the App's Own Input Settings
Every call app applies its own volume and processing after the system level. If the browser test shows healthy levels but one app is quiet, look here:
- Discord: User Settings → Voice & Video. Raise Input Volume. If people hear you cutting in and out quietly, disable Automatically determine input sensitivity and set the threshold manually so your normal voice clears it.
- Zoom: Settings → Audio. Raise the microphone level, and try toggling Automatically adjust microphone volume — auto-gain helps some setups and hurts others, so test both states.
- Teams / Meet: both apply automatic gain by default. If you're quiet, the usual culprit is the wrong input device selected inside the app rather than the level itself.
- Aggressive noise suppression (in any app) can eat a quiet voice entirely. If you have a low-output mic, try reducing the suppression level — then fix the noise at the source instead.
Fix 3 — Position and Technique
Microphone loudness falls off steeply with distance — moving from 40 cm to 10 cm from the mic gains you far more level than any software slider. Three physical checks:
- Distance: a headset boom belongs a few centimeters from the corner of your mouth; a desktop USB mic should be within roughly 15–30 cm, pointed at you.
- Address side: many desktop mics are side-address — you speak into the side with the logo, not the top. Speaking into the wrong side can cost a large chunk of your level and clarity.
- Hardware controls: check for a gain dial on the mic or audio interface, and an inline mute/volume wheel on headset cables — these get bumped constantly and sit before everything software can see.
Fix 4 — Connection and Hardware Causes
- USB hubs: some microphones receive marginal power through unpowered hubs. Plug directly into the computer.
- 3.5 mm mics: a TRRS headset plugged into a mic-only or wrong-standard port can produce a faint, distant signal. Use the correct port or a splitter/adapter that matches your headset.
- Drivers: on Windows, a generic driver can expose no boost and poor default gain — check the manufacturer's driver for USB audio devices.
- Wear and damage: if the same mic is quiet on another device too, and only when using that mic, the capsule or cable may be failing. Test a different mic on your machine to confirm which side is at fault.
A 60-Second Diagnostic Routine
- Run the mic test — is the meter healthy at normal speech?
- Healthy → fix the app: input volume, auto-gain, device selection.
- Quiet → max the system input level (add Windows boost if available) and re-test.
- Still quiet → halve your distance to the mic, confirm the address side, check hardware dials, and re-test.
- Still quiet → try another port/cable, then another mic, to isolate hardware failure.
